I didn’t camp much as a kid, though we did do most of our activities outside. I didn’t camp with my kids, because we were always busy into all the things that kids do. But there was this one time, and it’s a funny story. We went camping, all intentions were good to have a great time. We were there with some family friends. Let’s just say they were not fans. In fact, I believe they hated it. It rained one night, and my very sweet son believed he had to rescue me from my tent. I was warm, cozy, and dry until the rescue. But, I love that boy for thinking of me, and wanting me safe.
When I met Keith camping was one of the first things we did, and I loved it. It was peaceful and quiet, and allowed me to enjoy nature. Over the years we have camped many places, many ways, and never once was it a bad time. We enjoy the quiet, and the time to be together. And now, camping is our life.
One of the best times we’ve had camping was with our grandkids. We have three, and they are pretty darn cute. Their mom gets them outdoors anytime she can, so camping is perfect for them. While camping, I wondered what would make their time fun, and safe? I talked to their mom, and took some ideas from my life working with kiddos, and put together some info to help make your next camping trip a success.
Camping with Kids
Camping with kids is a fantastic way to introduce them to the great outdoors, foster a love of nature, and create lasting memories. While it may require some extra planning and preparation, the rewards are well worth it. Here’s a guide to help you plan a successful camping trip with your little ones.
Choosing the Right Campground
We find most state parks and COE campgrounds fit the bill for great kid camping. They are also budget friendly!
- Kid-friendly amenities: Look for campgrounds with playgrounds, swimming areas, and other family-friendly features.
- Proximity to attractions: Consider campgrounds near hiking trails, wildlife viewing areas, or other kid-friendly activities. Many campgrounds have age appropriate activities for kids throughout the year.
- Quiet and peaceful: If you’re looking for a relaxing getaway, choose a campground in a quieter area. But really….you have kids…..there’s no quiet and peaceful.
Packing Essentials (Link to our camping guide)
- Tents and sleeping bags: Ensure you have appropriate gear for your family’s size and camping conditions.
- Food and water: Pack plenty of food and water, especially if you’re camping in a remote area.
- Cooking equipment: Bring along a grill, camp stove, or other cooking equipment to prepare meals.
- First aid kit: A well-stocked first aid kit is essential for any camping trip. Check out our link to first aid kit essentials.
- Entertainment: Pack games, books, or other activities to keep your kids entertained. Look out for our more in depth posts in a couple of weeks for activities perfect for kids during your camping trip.
Planning Activities
- Hiking: Choose age-appropriate hikes that offer stunning views and opportunities for wildlife spotting. Keith and I use the AllTrails app. It’s a great way to be clear on where the trails are, and the level of difficulty of each trail.
- Swimming: If your campground has a swimming area, pack swimsuits and towels. Don’t forget your life jackets!
- Fishing: Introduce your kids to the joys of fishing with age-appropriate equipment. Some of my fondest memories are fishing with my grandfather from the shore of Lake Somerville. It wasn’t anything fancy, just my pole and us.
- Nature exploration: Encourage your kids to explore the natural surroundings and learn about local plants and animals. You never know what you’ll find. Keith and I found a Rosy Maple Moth. They are rare to see, but when you do they are beautiful.
Safety Tips
- Teach fire safety: Educate your kids about the dangers of fire and proper campfire etiquette.
- Teach water safety: Talk to your kids about water, and the danger it presents if not with a parent. It only takes a minute for a child to find its way to the water, and decide it looks like fun.
- Protect against insects: Use insect repellent and wear long sleeves and pants to avoid bug bites.
- Stay hydrated: Ensure your kids drink plenty of water throughout the day. You can never have enough, so plan accordingly.
- Supervise closely: Keep a close eye on your children, especially around water and other potential hazards. Walk the campsite, look for and hidden dangers, and give your kiddos boundaries they need to stay in.
Tips for a Successful Camping Trip with Kids
- Set realistic expectations: Don’t expect everything to go perfectly. Nothing goes as planned when kids are in the picture, so be prepared for unexpected challenges and setbacks.
- Involve your kids in the planning: Let your kids help choose the campground, plan activities, and pack their own gear.
- Be flexible: Be willing to adjust your plans if necessary. The most important thing is to have fun and create lasting memories.
- Focus on quality time: Spend quality time together, playing games, telling stories, and enjoying the outdoors. Try putting away the screens!
By following these tips, you can plan a memorable and enjoyable camping trip with your kids. Remember, the goal is to create lasting memories and foster a love of nature.
