This place is an absolute gem!!! If you ever get the chance to visit Arkansas, be sure to put this on your list of “must sees”. Keith and I spent several weeks in Arkansas a couple of years ago. We visited most of the state, and did a variety of adventures. Petit Jean State Park is at the top of our list.
Petit Jean State Park is a hidden gem nestled in the Ozark Mountains of Arkansas, offering stunning landscapes, outdoor adventures, and a rich history. With its towering cliffs, cascading waterfalls, and breathtaking vistas, this park is a must-visit for nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts.
A Brief History
Named after the legendary French explorer, Petit Jean, the park is steeped in history. The area was once inhabited by Native Americans, and evidence of their presence can still be found throughout the park. In the early 20th century, Petit Jean State Park was established and has since become a popular destination for visitors from all over the world.
Must-See Attractions
- Petit Jean Mountain: The park’s namesake, Petit Jean Mountain, offers stunning panoramic views of the surrounding area. Visitors can hike to the summit for a breathtaking experience. I’m truly amazed every time we stop here at how beautiful it is.
- Cedar Falls: This picturesque waterfall is a popular spot for picnics and swimming. The cascading waters create a tranquil atmosphere, perfect for relaxation. We recommend to visit in the spring when there is plenty of rain. The falls are nonexistent in the drier times of the year.
- Missouri Pacific Railroad Bridge: This historic railroad bridge, now a pedestrian walkway, offers stunning views of the Arkansas River Valley.
- Petit Jean State Park Museum: Learn about the park’s history and the people who have called it home through exhibits and displays.
- The Museum of Automobiles: Keith and I do love doing some of the different stuff wherever we visit, and this did not disappoint. There are some seriously cool cars here, and they were Tucker friendly.
- Petit Jean Gravesite Overlook: Stunning sunrise’s is all I can say. We love this spot for our mornings. Take a cup of coffee, find the perfect rock to sit, and watch the beauty unfold over the Arkansas River.
Hiking Trails
Petit Jean State Park is a playground for outdoor enthusiasts. Visitors can enjoy hiking, biking, camping, fishing, and horseback riding. The park offers a variety of trails suitable for all levels, from easy strolls to challenging hikes. These are some of our favorites! I have linked each trail to their name.
Grab a Treat
- The Outpost: This cute little store has sandwiches, chips, drinks and some of the best fudge around. It’s great for a light meal and a sweet treat. You will also find souvenirs and often forgotten necessities for your stay.
- Mather Lodge Restaurant: We haven’t had the opportunity to dine here yet, but it’s on the list. It comes highly recommended if you’re looking for some yummy southern cuisine.
- Petit Jean Coffee House and Mercantile: You will see Keith and I grabbing some coffee/tea accompanied by a yummy treat out on the patio of this cute little coffeeshop. By the way….it’s for sale if you’re looking for a new adventure in beautiful surroundings.
- Petit Jean Farmers Market: Do you even remember the days you dropped money in a can for your purchases? This cute little farmers market has a variety of items for sale. We stop here to grab some fresh cheese and jelly from a local farmer. Even better….you can camp here and wake up to help feed the goats. Check out their camping link here.
