If you haven’t figured it out by now, we love our pit bull mix Tucker, as if he were our child. He goes everywhere with us, and if he can’t, well then we probably aren’t going. He eats everything we eat, and I’m certain it’s what keeps him healthier than most dogs. We do keep a healthy dog food on hand for when he cannot have the same as us. I mean it could be dangerous if he had chili. Tucker loves a good treat. If you asked him, I think he’d rather eat treats all day than anything else.
I started the search for some healthier treats, but I found most treats that I found in stores had additives in them, or things I couldn’t pronounce. If they were all healthy ingredients, they cost a fortune. I decided to research some dog treat recipes, and then created one of my own that I knew he would love. I can honestly say that he loves these. He left Keith’s plate of spaghetti to have one.
These homemade pumpkin treats have apple, peanut butter and pumpkin as the main ingredients. They are packed with nutrients and natural flavors, and I’m sure these treats are going to be a hit with your dog.
Ingredients:
- 1 cup pumpkin puree
- 1 apple diced
- 1/2 cup peanut butter (make sure it doesn’t contain xylitol, which is toxic to dogs)
- 1/2 cup almond flour
- 1/8 cup water
- 2 eggs
Instructions:
- Preheat your oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
- Combine ingredients: In a large bowl, combine the pumpkin puree, apple sauce, peanut butter, almond flour, water, and egg. Mix until well combined.
- Form into balls: Form dough in to balls and then slightly flatten
- Prepare to bake: Line cookie sheet with parchment paper and place dough at least 1″ apart
- Bake: Bake for 20-25 minutes, or until the edges are golden brown.
- Cool: Let the treats cool completely before giving them to your dog.
Tips:
- For a softer treat, bake for a shorter time.
- For a harder treat, bake for a longer time.
- Store the treats in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to a week.
Enjoy making these treats with your furry friend!
If you have the time to try these, I would love to know if your dog loves them as much as our Tucker. Want some other great ideas on treats for dogs? See our post on The Doghouse page “Tucker Wants Yummies”.
