If you know me, then you know I LOVE THE HOLIDAYS!!! It is by far my favorite time of the year. I love the fall season leading into Thanksgiving and then Christmas. The music, lights and the feeling of this time of year is hard to beat. BUT…..it can be incredibly stressful. In fact, studies show that 50% of people claim their stress levels significantly increase during the holiday season. So, what do we do to help decrease the crazy this season entails?
Here are some tips to help you de-stress and enjoy the holidays:
Set Realistic Expectations:
- Prioritize: Focus on what truly matters to you and let go of unnecessary stress.
- Not everyone will get along: Family gatherings can sometimes lead to disagreements or tension. It’s important to accept that not everyone will always see eye to eye.
- Things won’t always go as planned: Unexpected events can disrupt even the best-laid plans. Be flexible and adaptable.
- You don’t have to attend every event: It’s okay to say no to certain invitations if you feel overwhelmed.
- It’s okay to take breaks: If you’re feeling stressed, take some time for yourself to relax and recharge.
- Perfect isn’t realistic: Don’t strive for perfection. Focus on spending quality time with loved ones and creating positive memories.
Practice Self-Care:
- Take Breaks: Schedule time for relaxation and rejuvenation.
- Mindful Breathing: Practice deep breathing exercises to calm your mind and body.
- Physical Activity: Engage in regular physical activity, such as yoga or walking.
- Healthy Eating: Nourish your body with healthy foods to boost your energy levels.
- Sufficient Sleep: Prioritize sleep to recharge your mind and body.
- Set Boundaries: Don’t overcommit yourself. You schedule does not need to be full to enjoy the season.
Manage Holiday Stressors:
- Budget Wisely: Create a holiday budget, and stick to it, to avoid financial stress.
- Delegate Tasks: Don’t hesitate to ask for help from family and friends.
- Limit Screen Time: Reduce exposure to screens before bed to improve sleep quality.
- Practice Gratitude: Focus on the positive aspects of the holiday season.
Connect with Loved Ones:
- Quality Time: Spend quality time with loved ones, engaging in meaningful conversations.
- Limit Conflict: Avoid controversial topics and focus on positive interactions.
- Practice Active Listening: Pay attention to others and show empathy.
Over the last couple of years, I have been intentionally practicing some of these tactics, and it has made a world of difference in my stress level, and enjoyment of the holiday season. Incorporate some of these tips into your holiday routine so you can do the same and create lasting memories. Remember, the holidays are a time for joy, peace, and connection.
