So, years ago I was struggling through a really rough time of my life. I was engulfed in raising kids, working full time, trying to repair my marriage and dealing with self doubt among other things. I was lucky enough to find an amazing therapist. Throughout our discussions she pointed out that I never talked about how I was taking care of me. I remember thinking, “Is that a thing?”. I was never taught to put myself first, to think of my well being before others. What I realized was, I didn’t take care of me, and I hadn’t in many years. She made clear that “me time” needed to be at the top of my list going forward.
I spent some time trying to decide what “me time” would even look like. My current hobbies included whatever my kids were doing, or what work needed from me. In fact, I could not even figure out what I would do with my time if it wasn’t wrapped around the chaos of my life. So here’s a little information I put together for those who are just starting out, or need to be reminded about what me time is, and how to find it for yourself. The popular statement should be repeated here….
Me Time: Your Essential Recharge
In our fast-paced world filled with endless responsibilities and distractions, it’s easy to forget about one of the most important people in our lives: ourselves. That’s where “me time” comes in.
What is Me Time?
Me time is dedicated time for self-care and rejuvenation. It’s a conscious effort to prioritize your mental, emotional, and physical well-being. It’s about disconnecting from the noise of everyday life and reconnecting with yourself. Think about it like it’s a work meeting or a kids function….it goes on the calendar just the same. I talk a little about where I found me time in my post about Panera.
Why is Me Time Important?
- Reduces stress: Taking a break from the constant hustle and bustle allows your mind to relax and de-stress.
- Boosts creativity: When you give your brain a rest, it has the space to think creatively and come up with new ideas.
- Improves focus: Me time helps you recharge, so you can return to your tasks with renewed energy and focus.
- Enhances relationships: By taking care of yourself, you’re better equipped to nurture your relationships with others.
- Increases self-awareness: Spending time alone allows you to reflect on your thoughts, feelings, and goals.
How to Incorporate Me Time into Your Life:
- Set aside dedicated time: Schedule regular “me time” into your calendar, just like any other important appointment.
- Find what works for you: Whether it’s reading, taking a bath, going for a walk, or practicing yoga, choose activities that truly relax and rejuvenate you.
- Unplug: Turn off your phone and other distractions to fully immerse yourself in your me time.
- Start small: Even short bursts of me time can make a difference. Begin with a few minutes of meditation or deep breathing each day.
- Be kind to yourself: Don’t feel guilty about taking time for yourself. It’s essential for your overall well-being.
Remember, me time isn’t selfish; it’s self-care. By prioritizing your needs, you’re better equipped to handle life’s challenges and live a happier, more fulfilling life. So, go ahead, schedule that massage, read that book, or simply enjoy a quiet cup of coffee. Your future self will thank you.
