Society often teaches that success is defined by external achievements, such as: wealth, status, material possessions, a high-paying job, and a fancy car. I’m the first to admit that I lived many years of my life with this exact thought process. I had a huge mortgage, two car payments, and was working a lot of hours to manage the two. As i have gotten older, and spent years of thinking long and hard about what makes me happy, and what is success for me, those thoughts have changed.
Today, I embrace the simple life. No mortgage payments, no car payments, and very little debt. My home has what I need, and a few things that I want. Now, we go by the theory that nothing new comes in unless something old goes out…. I mean, we at least do this about 90 percent of the time. I have found that my wants have become less material, and more about time. Time to spend with others, and sometimes just with myself. Time to make memories, because our days on this Earth are numbered, and there are no do-overs.
I know that in today’s fast-paced world, it can be challenging to slow down and appreciate the simple things in life. Yet, embracing a simpler lifestyle can offer numerous benefits for both your physical and mental well-being. Let’s explore the advantages of living simply and learn how to incorporate it into your daily life.
Benefits of Living Simply
- Reduced Stress: Clutter and excess possessions can contribute to feelings of stress and anxiety. By simplifying your life, you can declutter your physical space and free your mind from unnecessary worries. I can honestly say I am less stressed than I have ever been in my life.
- Improved Focus: Stuff can be distracting. When you have fewer distractions, you can focus on what truly matters. A simpler lifestyle can enhance your ability to concentrate and be more productive.
- Enhanced Relationships: This has definitely been the biggest bonus of choosing the simpler life. By taking the time to focus on quality over quantity, you can deepen your connections with loved ones and build stronger relationships.
- Increased Financial Freedom: When you’re not succumbing to society’s definition of success, you decrease the amount of stuff in your life. Less stuff equals less money going out. A simpler lifestyle often means spending less money. By reducing unnecessary expenses, you can save more and achieve greater financial stability.
- Greater Appreciation for Life: With the decrease in must haves, I get to spend more time doing the things I enjoy. Additionally, when you focus on the essentials, you can develop a deeper appreciation for the simple joys in life.
How to Start Living Simply
- Declutter Your Space: Most who know me know i talk about this all the time. Begin by decluttering your home and eliminating unnecessary possessions. Donate items you no longer need or use. Clutter in your space is clutter in your mind post is coming soon.
- Mindful Spending: Become more intentional with your spending habits. Consider whether a purchase is truly necessary or if it’s driven by impulse. Use the 24-hour rule…..think it over for 24 hours, and if you still feel you need or want it, then buy it.
- Prioritize Experiences Over Possessions: This is a huge focus for Keith and I now. We live for life experiences….with us, our kids, and friends. Focus on creating meaningful experiences rather than accumulating material goods.
- Practice Mindfulness: Be present, be in the moment, to get the most out of each day. Incorporate mindfulness techniques into your daily routine to cultivate a sense of calm and presence.
- Disconnect from Technology: I know this is a hard one….seriously, it is probably one of the most difficult in today’s society. But, it is important to limit your screen time. Spend more time engaging in activities that bring you joy and fulfillment, and less time focused on a screen.
Living simply doesn’t mean giving up on your dreams or sacrificing comfort. It’s about making conscious choices that align with your values and prioritize what truly matters in life. By embracing a simpler lifestyle, you can experience greater peace, happiness, and fulfillment.
Life will always be what you make it! By choosing to simplify it, at least in some areas, you will find deeper, more meaningful purpose each day.
