Beggin?
Bacon? Hmmm, I’m not sure what you call it, but I know it’s good. Daddy sometimes calls it steak, tuna fish, or my favorite, bar snack mix from Spec’s. Whatever table scraps they are, I know I get really excited when I hear a bag open, lid twist off, or even when the refrigerator door opens. I kinda feel like this guy in the video below…
I’ve been told I “act a fool” when I think I’m gonna get a treat from the table. I sometimes don’t listen when Mommy and Daddy tell me to go lay down because I’m “Beggin” at the table. Come on though, would you if you thought Daddy was gonna slip you a nice crispy piece of bacon while Mommy isn’t lookin’? I think not.
My Daddy and Papa give me lots of good stuff, but Mommy tells them not to. She knows that even though I may want something, it can make me sick sometimes. I’m not sure how something that tastes so good can make my belly feel so bad. I guess my Mommy’s right that there are lots of safe and unsafe foods for dogs.
For example, I was having a blast one day at the beach chasing birds…have I said how much I love to chase birds? Afterwards, we went to this place that has tables outside. The best part is that they bring food right out to you. My Daddy and I had some Shimp Etouffee. When I got home that night, I did not feel good, AT ALL! Mommy says it was too spicy, but it tasted sooooooooo good!
Foods to Avoid
So, apparently there are some foods I just should not have. Here’s a short list of what you should make sure I never eat even though you think they’re yummy.
- Onions~ Onions contain a toxic principle known as N-propyl disulfide. This compound causes a breakdown of red blood cells, leading to anemia in dogs.
- Avocado~ They contain persin, fungicidal toxin, which can cause diarrhea, vomiting and heart congestion.
- Grapes/Raisins~ They contain toxic compounds that can lead to kidney failure and death.
- Chocolate~ Dogs can’t metabolize theobromine and caffeine in chocolate, which can lead to vomiting, diarrhea, and dehydration.
- Xylitol~ Xylitol is toxic to dogs and can be fatal, even in small amounts. Double check all treats are free from this ingredient. https://www.fda.gov/consumers/consumer-updates/paws-xylitol-its-dangerous-dogs
- Alcohol~ Alcohol can be deadlier for dogs than humans because they are smaller, and can cause vomiting and disorientation.
- Caffeine~ Caffeine is toxic to dogs because they are more sensitive to its effects than humans. Caffeine can be found in coffee, tea, and other products, and even a small amount can cause symptoms of poisoning.

But I Can Have These Yummy Treats
- Chicken~ Chicken provides lots of protein. Chicken should be served without added seasonings or sauces. Make sure all chicken is fully cooked and has no bones.
- Salmon~ Salmon provides protein and is a great source of Omega 3’s which helps with skin/coat health and inflammation. Make sure all salmon is fully cooked and has no bones.
- Blueberries/Strawberries/Raspberries~ Most berries are safe for dogs to eat. Here’s a full list of berries your dog can have and what to avoid. They are low in calories and have lots of vitamins and minerals.
- Yogurt~ I love Yogurt! It’s one of my favorites. Mom shares hers every morning at breakfast, well I get to lick the bowl. Yogurt is good for your dogs digestion and is typically easier for dogs to digest because it has lower amounts of lactose. Make sure it’s plain yogurt with no sugar additives.
- Eggs~ Eggs are a healthy treat for dogs because they are high in protein, essential fatty acids, and amino acids. They also contain vitamins A, B2, and B12, as well as linoleic acid, which can be good for a dog’s skin and coat. Yes, dogs can eat eggs as long as they are fully cooked.
But These Are My Favorites
- Cheese~ Cheese is safe for most dogs in small quantities. Due to the fat and lactose, some dogs may have digestive issues. Cheese provides protein and calcium. Try small amounts to begin with to see how your pup responds. The best cheeses for dogs are mozzarella, cheddar and cottage cheese.
- Pumpkin~ . It’s naturally rich in fiber as well as vitamins A, C, and E and minerals like potassium and iron. Pumpkin aids in digestion and can assist with stomach upset.
- Peanut Butter~ We have reached my absolute FAVORITE!!!! I LOVE PEANUT BUTTER. Ooops, did I yell that? Peanut butter in moderate amounts is healthy for dogs. It’s a good source of proteins, healthy fats and vitamins and minerals. Make sure peanut butter has no added sweeteners as these are harmful.
So What Now
Back to me though….I suppose I’ll try not to beg at the table as much and listen better when Mommy tells me that I can’t have something. (yeah right 🙂 ) . I know that she just wants me to be happy and healthy so we can go chase more ducks and squirrels. Check back for my next post on all the How To Keep Your Pup Safe In The Summer Months
