In life, we all face challenges and obstacles. These can manifest as personal struggles, professional struggles, or even societal struggles. It is important to be aware of what we are struggling with so that we can address these issues and work towards overcoming them.
Over the last few weeks we have discussed the importance of healthy mental health. We have talked about ways to get our thoughts on paper, and ways to see what we are feeling and why. Now, it’s time to look back on those notes and identify what our key struggles are at this time. If we don’t identify them, then we can’t actively work on them. And if we don’t work on them, well, then we will never be healthy.
It’s not always easy to look deep and work on what most affects our thoughts. Sometimes we feel like burying it, because then we don’t have to hurt, or get angry. We believe it’s not affecting our daily lives, and no one sees it. The reality is, it affects every thought and every decision we make each day. And the reality is, most of our closest people see it. So, let’s start by looking at different areas that our struggles may fall into, identifying what the core issues are and then putting them front and center of our journey to work on.
What are some of the common struggles that people face?

How can you define your own struggles?
It is important to be honest with yourself about what you are struggling with. This can be a difficult process, but it is essential for making progress. Some tips for defining your struggles include:
- Listen to Your Body: Pay attention to physical cues like fatigue, headaches, or digestive issues. These can often signal underlying emotional or mental struggles.
- Tune In to Your Emotions: Notice recurring feelings like anxiety, sadness, anger, or frustration. Are there specific situations or people that trigger these emotions? Using your journal will help identify these.
- Reflect on Your Behavior: Over the last several weeks have you noticed any of the following? Are you engaging in unhealthy coping mechanisms like excessive drinking, overeating, or social withdrawal? Are your relationships strained?
- Observe Your Thoughts: Are you constantly experiencing negative self-talk or dwelling on past failures? Remember, what we focus on will be what we grow. If you want to find a more positive mindset, then that has to be your focus. If you sit and dwell in the ugly, then that is where you will stay.
- Keep a Journal: I’m a huge believer in journaling, and its ability to help us identify where we are at both mentally and physically. Regularly journaling your thoughts and feelings can help you see patterns and recurring themes.
Don’t be afraid to be honest with yourself. Identifying your struggles isn’t about self-criticism; it’s about self-awareness. Recognizing your challenges is the first step towards finding effective coping mechanisms and seeking support when needed.
Once you have identified your struggles, you can begin to develop a plan for overcoming them. This may involve seeking professional help, making lifestyle changes, or setting personal goals. As we move through this month we will work on key ways that work for each one of us to overcome the battles we face.
Remember, you are not alone in your struggles. Everyone faces challenges in life. By being aware of your struggles and taking steps to address them, you can overcome them and live a happier, more fulfilling life.
